Ocean Power Technologies Inc. (OPT) is developing its power generation system by combining ocean waves with renewable energy. The company provides the PB3 powerBooy for power generation at remote offshore locations via an independent grid. Ocean Proven PB3 PowerBuoy is a line of products that provide power and communications for autonomous wave energy. This was the foundation for OPT’s solutions for various offshore challenges within the Gulf of Mexico. OPT announced recently the launch of two products: a hybrid PowerBuoy, and an underwater Battery. The system uses a combination of renewable energy from ocean wave energy and a technology to convert mechanical energy generated by ocean waves’ rise and fall into electricity. The concept has been tested in several projects around the world, but its economic viability is still a problem.
Ocean Power is a technology that can be used to provide power and communications in remote areas, such as offshore oilfields. The International Energy Agency (IEA) claims that ocean energy could help reduce the effects of climate changes by reducing the carbon emissions of fossil fuels, and increase the production of electricity by 500 million tonnes by the year 2050. Ocean energy is renewable because it is the largest solar energy collector and store in the world. It is a reliable and constant source of electricity compared to other renewable sources. Ocean Power Technologies announced that one of its PB3 PowerBooy waves energy converters had been in continuous operation for more than a full year and a quarter. The converter was used to power underwater vessels of the Italian oil company Eni, located in the Adriatic Sea.
They are similar to wind turbines, but they’re underwater. The turbines are arranged in a row and work with coastal currents between 36 to 49 knots. The turbines are heavier because they can absorb more energy and are more stable.
The company’s mission is to provide reliable and cost-effective solutions for ocean energy that will enable their customers to achieve new capabilities, while adding value to their shareholders and employees.
